Everyone knows stress can cause headaches and sleepless nights.
Simply feeling stressed-out was not linked to gray matter shrinkage. But feeling stressed-out combined with a history of stressful life events was. In particular, stress was linked to markedly less gray matter than expected in a part of the prefrontal cortex that regulates emotion and self-control, not to mention blood pressure and blood sugar.
Just watch your stress levels, and be sure to start adding things you enjoy!
Douglas Bayne joined the Merritt Athletic Club in downtown Baltimore about five years ago, but he hasn't exactly been a gym rat.
So like many other Americans, Bayne resolved to get healthy in 2012. He spent New Year's Day at the gym, hopping onto the treadmill for a 60-minute walk. He hopes to gain energy and improve his health as approaches "the big 4-0," he said.
An exercise for the waistline...but a writing exercise.
"Scientists believe that people can get stuck in repeating cycles, in which failure to lose weight impairs psychological functioning, which in turn increases the risk of more failure."
Dieting and weight control are really pretty simple. We gain weight and have trouble losing it because we eat too much and move too little.
But that's just the biology of weight control. What about the psychology? Why do we habitually take in too many calories, even when we know those calories are a ticket to obesity and all sorts of chronic diseases?

“A man grows most tired while standing still.”–Chinese proverb
It’s tough being tired all day. I’ve had days like this, when I’m struggling through the day and don’t have the energy to tackle anything that matters. Hell, I’ve had years like this.
When you’re tired, not much seems appealing. Life is dulled, and you don’t get much accomplished. Worst, you don’t have the energy to change the situation.
Are you one of your biggest fans? Do you think you're capable and worthy? Would you pick yourself to be on your team? If you answered 'no' to any of the above questions, you could use an attitude change and a healthful infusion of personal esteem.
Self-esteem is described as confidence in one's own worth or abilities, and pertains to a personal appraisal of ourselves. Yet, unfortunately, we often make this evaluation based on cues we receive from society.
Weights Vs. Cardio: Your Guide To The Perfect Body. You run and you run, and you don't shed a pound. It's one of the leading emotional pain points for people who exercise. All of that effort and so little reward, but why is that?

You are what you eat. You’re also how you feel, how you exercise, how you sleep, how you handle money, how you relate to people, and what you value.
If you’re worried about your well-being,
Harvard experts across an array of fields have some advice: Eat thoughtfully, exercise often, raise your children well, stash a few bucks away, and stop thinking it’s all about you.
"It's been a year of big breakthroughs in integrative medicine, the approach that combines Western or allopathic medicine with complementary practices.
So much so that Prevention magazine recently declared us to be in the midst of a "health care revolution" as ever more doctors work elements like yoga, acupuncture and mindfulness into more, quote, traditional care."
If you are one of the millions of Americans suffering from obesity and are contemplating beginning an exercise regimen, fear of ridicule or embarrassment can be one of the biggest factors keeping you from getting started.

Vegans make up only a sliver of the thousands of competitive bodybuilders in the United States, but they have been a steady presence since the 2000s.
As the popularity of veganism has spread in recent years — fueled in part by a flurry of food-focused documentaries like “Super Size Me,” “Food, Inc.” and “Forks Over Knives” — its imprint can be seen in industries like publishing (VegNews) and fashion (hemp tote bags).

Arguments between teens and parents can be a critical training ground for teens to learn how to resist negative peer pressure, research suggests. The best thing parents can do to help their teenager argue more effectively?
If you're the parent of a teenager, you likely find yourself routinely embroiled in disputes with your child. Those disputes are the symbol of teen developmental separation from parents.

We don’t exactly love it when our faces are set ablaze mid-kickboxing class. So we had to ask: What’s up with turning so red?
Much like sweating, turning bright red is a normal side effect of getting all hot and bothered. When our skin gets warmer than the air around us— whether from exercise or just being too sexy for our shirts— the body begins taking some drastic measures (yeah, we consider that flush drastic) to cool down.

In the battle to lose weight, and keep it off, our bodies are fighting against us.
Anyone who has ever dieted knows that lost pounds often return, and most of us assume the reason is a lack of discipline or a failure of willpower. But Dr. Joseph Proietto suspected that there was more to it, and he decided to take a closer look at the biological state of the body after weight loss.
These particular health and fitness notions represent some of what I think are the biggest misconceptions that have been perpetuated throughout the years. As we move ahead into a brand new year, full of possibilities and new things to learn, it would be appropriate for us to cast off these ill-conceived ideas, and move ahead with an open mind.
"Health in the modern era, health in the 21st century is a learned skill. It is an adaptive trait.”
~ Jeff Olson speaking at the TEDxMileHigh event April 2011
The quote from his talk which I highlighted above was related to an experience of his, where he gave a talk at a MENSA conference.
Despite being immersed within a gathering some of the most intelligent people on the planet, Jeff was shocked to discover how unhealthy and out of shape most of them appeared to be.
It reveals a sad truth about the state of health for the modern human, where being robust and strong is not a birthright, not even for those fortunate enough to be born in a wealthy country such as the United States.
As most of us prepare our exercise resolutions for 2012, now seems the ideal time to review the past year in fitness science and the lessons it contained, both encouraging and cautionary.
If all the Phys Ed columns published this year have a single message, it is that now is a fine time to own a body.
